Rangers are range and stealth focused players that provide long range support against zombies and take out dangerous targets before normal players would be able to do so.
Overview
The ranger provides a service to the survivors. They roll alone or in small groups to remain undetected and thin groups of zombies before the main group arrives. In day to day game they take out targets to stop the threat before it even arises. Being a ranger requires a blaster that can shoot reliably and cleanly great distances, a knowledge of the surroundings and useful vantage points and the ability to move and remove oneself quickly and quietly.
Usage
Strategy
A ranger is a class that should adapt with the given situation. The diversity of weapons carried by a ranger will dictate an individual’s effectiveness in a situation and knowing personal strengths and weaknesses is key to ranger survival. The main considerations are distance and reload time. Blasters with long ranges often take longer to reload, with the inverse being true as well. This being considered, play style can be determined.
When staying with the main group of humans, a ranger should act as a satellite to the boddy of the group. When acting in this way, distant zombies can be stunned, removing scouts from the main zombie group. Distance between both the group and approaching zombies should be judged guaranteeing that several shots can be fired while forming back into the group for safety if zombie numbers are too great.
When acting alone stealth is the main priority. Vantage and choke points should be used to further improve survivability. However, since firing speed is often limited, knowing when to fall back and having an escape plan is crucial. As well as contingency plans, have an easy to fire, compact secondary weapon or socks at the ready.
During missions, rangers should act as an advance force, stunning as many zombies as possible while providing invaluable information for the rest of the human team. When the main group approaches the target area, rangers should look for a flanking position to block off the remainder of active zombies in the area.
A ranger should always target lone zombies or small groups at most to maximize effectiveness. Situations such as this will always occur in mission scenarios, siege breaking and day to day survival. As long as there is proper distance maintained, escape routes or hiding places and a clear view, a ranger will prove to be invaluable. The only situation in which a ranger may be at a disadvantage is in confined spaces or indoors.
Timeline
The ranger class model should be used throughout the game due to the versatility of the class.
Load Out
One high range blaster and geerally one light secondary to be used for close range encounters. Try to find a primary that has a good compromise between range and rate of fire.
Longshot
Longstrike
Nitefinder
Titan
Big Bad Bow
Blowguns
Subclasses
The Assassin
A Ranger focusing on range significantly over rate of fire, the Assassin rolls with as few people as possible. The goal of an Assassin is to take pot-shots at single zombies or the horde, to reduce numbers and remove targets of value (if possible, if you can aim well enough to hit man sized targets from your maximum range then you are most likely magic). Distance is key to survival with this load out. An off brand dart bow or a clip system removed Longshot are good ideas for this load out.
The Designated Marksman
As a Ranger built to run with a squad, the Designated Marksman is focused primarily on taking out horde members before the rest of his group can. As soon as a horde becomes visible, the Marksman should move to the front lines of his squad and take repeated shots against the horde, stopping only to make a gradual retreat into the center or back of his squad as the horde prepares to charge. A blowgun or modded longshot is a very good choice for this type of Ranger.
Support Class: The Spotter
The Spotter is a class designed specifically to roll with a Ranger. As a Spotter, the goal is to keep your Ranger alive and out of the way of zombies. This should be done through locating, distracting, and stunning nearby zombies. The middle part, distraction, is the key element here. As a Spotter, any found zombies must be kept chasing you, rather than searching for the Ranger. This is best accomplished performing short, skirmishing attacks against Hordes, or individual zombies. A Scout load out, or a transitional load out of at least part Scout, is recommended. Alpha Troopers, Barricades, Mavericks, Recons, and minimized Stampedes are all recommended for a Spotter.
